Special consultations on fertility preservation after cancer
The chances of survival and recovery from cancer have increased significantly in recent decades thanks to improvements in oncological therapy concepts.
For younger patients, this means that they too can include their desire to have children in their plans for the future.
However, depending on the type of underlying disease and the necessary surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, the function of the ovaries or spermatogenesis may be permanently impaired. The extent of the damage depends decisively on the underlying disease and the individually applied treatment.
Thanks to developments in recent years, various concepts are available to preserve fertility even after cancer therapy. Therefore, a timely consultation before starting cancer therapy is useful to discuss your fertility protection options depending on the planned therapy, your age and your wishes.
Possible interventions include, in the case of women:
- Protecting the ovaries under chemotherapy by administering drugs
- The collection and cryopreservation of
- fertilised oocytes
- unfertilised oocytes
- ovarian tissue
- The surgical relocation of the ovaries in the case of irradiation of the pelvis minor
In men, it is possible to freeze sperm samples or sperm cells isolated from the testicular tissue (TESE).
The decision as to whether or which treatment is best suited to your individualsituation should be made in a personal consultation.
